54 Damage status of the tree
Dictionary: d_tree_damage_status
DEAD TREES have to be reported as follows:
-
code_tree_damage_status = 4 (see d_tree_damage_status)
-
defoliation = 100% or -1 (see d_defoliation). Code -1 (no assessment) should be used for trees that could not be assessed for defoliation (removal codes 7, 8, 11-19, 21-29, and 41-49).
-
survey year: The death is reported in the first year when it is observed. In general, no information is submitted in the succeeding years. Only in case that in the succeeding years the reason (i.e. a biotic damage) may be found to be the reason for the tree’s dying, this damage should be submitted with the respective forms.
-
damage assessment: It is mandatory to submit cause of death and/or symptoms for standing dead trees (RM codes 31-39) and for fallen trees (RM codes 41-49). However, cut and removed trees (RM codes 11-19) do not need any damage assessment. In general, if the cause of the death is unknown, submit cause 999 (see d_cause).
Here are recommendations how to report special cases:
- standing dead tree without any particular symptoms: affected_part = 34 (whole trunk), symptom = 14 (dead/dying), cause = 999 (Investigated but unidentified)
- windthrown trees: affected_part 34 (whole trunk), symptom 22 (Fallen (with roots)), cause 431 (Wind/Tornado)
NO SYMPTOMS at all are observed on any part of the tree:
- code_tree_damage_status = 0 (see d_tree_damage_status)
NO DAMAGE ASSESSMENT was conducted:
- code_tree_damage_status = 9 (see d_tree_damage_status)
IN ALL CASES DESCRIBED ABOVE FOLLOWING CODES SHOULD BE USED IN ADDITION
-
symptom = 99 (see d_symptom)
-
specification of symptom = 99 (see d_spec_symptom)
-
location in crown = 9 (see d_loccrown)
-
age of damage = 9 (see d_damage_age)
