John Derome (+ 7.6.2010)

For more than twenty years John Derome represented Finland in ICP Forests - the United Nations forest monitoring programme in Europe. With ever growing commitment, John took part actively in the shaping and further development of the programme. It was not only his scientific expertise but also his sure instinct for administrative and political issues for which he was appreciated by his colleagues in the programme. Besides this, he was respected as a distinguished personality.

During the time of his disease, John set an outstanding example of braveness. None of his numerous colleagues across Europe ever heard John complain, but instead many of them continued to benefit from John’s experience and advice. With the programme leaders, John discussed the future of the work until his last days.

We are the more concerned to learn about John’s death. We are mourning for John, we will miss him, and we will hold him in fond remembrance not only as a most committed colleague but also as a reliable friend.
