Notes on the bryophyte and lichen lists The structure of these lists is generally in accordance with the Flora Europaea list for vascular plants. It differs in the following items: - The authors of the scientific names are missing. - Some species groups, e.g. Eurhynchium striatum agg., are included in the list. The definition of these groups and some more remarks concerning the circumscription or synonymy of species (groups) can be found in an additional column "remarks". - The sequence of families, genera and species is in alphabetic order. The lists are available in Text format. Nomenclature and systematics of bryophytes follow: Frey W., Frahm J.-P., Fischer E. & Lobin W. 1995: Die Moos- und Farnpflanzen Europas. In: Kleine Kryptogamenflora. Vol. IV. 6th ed. - Gustav Fischer Verlag, Stuttgart-Jena-New York. Some few adjustments had to be made at family level: - For the subdivision of Marchantiales into families some information is missing in Frey et al. (1995). - The genus Pleurozium was transferred from Entodontaceae to Hypnaceae - see also the remark on page 305 in Frey et al. As this list originally was prepared for use in an Austrian vegetation database, probably some boreal, Mediterranean or Atlantic species are missing. However, it should be complete for Central Europe and the Alps. The family codes start with 301, the highest number is 412, whereas the highest number in the Flora Europaea list is 203. Missing numbers are foreseen for the addition of more taxa. The lichen list includes only a selection of the most important species which can be expected to grow in forests on the ground. Only the important genus Cladonia (incl. Cladina) should be nearly complete for Europe. Nomenclature of lichens generally follows: Wirth V. 1995: Die Flechten Baden-Württembergs. 2nd ed. (2 Vol.) - Verlag Eugen Ulmer. Stuttgart. Some species were added using: Poelt J. 1974: Bestimmungsschlüssel europäischer Flechten. - Cramer. Vaduz. Within the lichens no families have been distinguished. To all species the family code 500 is given. The lists can be used without restrictions within the ICP Forests program and for non-commercial purposes in your organisation.
